Biofuel protest - Shoreham 07th May
There are plans underfoot for a biofuel power station to be built, which will be bad news for the environment. A protest is planned as per below. Hope to see you there - cheers
On 7th May, Adur Council's Planning Committee will be voting on the planning application for a biofuel power station at Shoreham Port, submitted by Edgeley Green Power.
Please come along to a peaceful banner protest against Edgeley Green Power's plans at 6.30 pm, organised jointly by local campaign group NO2 Shoreham Biofuels and Biofuelwatch. At 7 pm, people will be going to the public gallery to listen to the planning hearing.
Where? Civic Centre, Ham Road, Shoreham-by-Sea (near the Shoreham train station)
What to bring? Please bring a placard or banner if you can.
Why? The power station, if approved would burn 50,000 tonnes of biofuels every year. Although Edgeley Green Power (EGP) claim that they don't intend to use palm oil, every single biofuel power station ever built in Europe has ended up burning palm oil, which is by far the cheapest vegetable oil. If planning permission was granted, there would be nothing to stop the same from happening in Shoreham. And even if EGP managed to burn other biofuels, they would still add to an already unsustainable and highly destructive UK demand for biofuels and thus to deforestation, land-grabbing and hunger worldwide.
For people living nearby (including in Shoreham, Southwick and Portslade), the power station would mean significantly more pollution (mainly nitrogen dioxide and small particulates in an area where legal air quality limits are already being breached at many locations - and thus a greater risk of respiratory and heart disease. The biofuel power station would emit 1.7 times as much nitrogen dioxide as the existing Shoreham Power Station even though it produce 13 times less electricity.
Please help spread the word: Please to spread the word about the banner protest and planning hearing. If you use Facebook, then please help by inviting others through this events page: https://www.facebook.com/events/5563650 ... ext=create . Many thanks!
