BRIGHTON SEWAGE POLLUTION INCIDENT – SAS ALERT
SAS have received worrying reports of an extensive raw sewage slick in the water between Palace Pier and West Pier, Brighton - 27.11.12
At 7.15 this morning the P2P Swimming Club entered the water for their morning swim, however only metres from the West Pier the swimmers found themselves in the middle of a slick of raw sewage. Paul Smith MD of Swim UK, (bravely) counted 20-25 pieces of solid excrement in his immediate vicinity, he said “It’s the worst we’ve seen it in over 30 years, the slick stretched as far as the eye could see”.
The swimming club have reported the incident to SAS & the EA’s Pollution Incident Hotline (0800 80 70 60) and are awaiting their response. Gentle winds and calm waters mean it’s a great day to enjoy the water, if you are a Brighton water user this incident has the potential to seriously impact upon your health. SAS have spoken with Southern water numerous times this morning. At this point they are stating that it is a non-sewage related issue as none of their assets been flagged as having discharged. We have requested that they triple check the assets and make an effort to do a physical check of the affected area.
P2P Swimming Club in Brighton immediately left the water and have suspended all swims for the next couple of days and are taking precautions with their health. Once again UK water users have been forced to risk their health to take part in the sports they love. If you have also witnessed this incident please call the EA’s Pollution Incident Hotline on 0800 80 70 60 quoting reference 1062423. Please then forward all details including photos and video, which are important forms of supporting evidence to dom@sas.org.uk. If you would like to donate to our Sewage Alert Service they can text “SURF12£3” to 70070 SAS
